Our Weekend

This weekend we did a lot around the house. I cleaned out part of our basement and collected a big box of old nick nacks to take to our local consignment shop, Fabulous Finds. Matt replaced our basement door with a new and more secure one while Marcus and I snuck back to our secret park again. We ate at our favorite diner, Mountain View and watched the movie The Big Year, which we loved. I managed to get in the studio both Saturday and Sunday at 6 am before Matt and Marcus woke up, which was insanely early but worth it.

All in all it was a uneventful, nice and mellow weekend!

Sunday at La Contessa/La Terra in Baltimore

What a treat it was to show my Beads & Baubles in my friend Mary's beautiful studio and storefront space! Everyone who came by was equally as intrigued as I by where the beautiful La Contessa jewelry line is handmade.

The beads looked absolutely beautiful, the sun was extra bright on Sunday giving all the jewels an additional sparkle.

The best part of the day was getting to spend time catching up with Mary and seeing friends I hadn't seen in a long time.

We did have a few people come by expecting to see my jewelry so I will be coming back to with my collection for a special Mother's Day event Sunday, May 6. I'll post more details when I have them.

My Saturday Afternoon At The Muse

I had a great time at The Muse on Saturday, hanging out with Ms Whitney, her friends and customers! I was so happy people didn't let the snow and rain stop them from coming by.

It was a treat to see in person who was drawn to which particular pieces. I parted ways with a few of my favorite one-of-a-kind necklaces and it was fun to get to see who was bringing them home.

I learned how important it is to offer necklaces in a variety of lengths, I have a long list of special orders to make this week in various lengths up to 20 inches. I also learned that whatever jewelry Whitney is wearing everyone will want! :)

DIY Vintage Teacup Holder Earring Tree

I love coming up with new ways to display my jewelry. Instead of keeping my collection in a box I like to incorporate it into an interesting vintage wall or dresser display, which I can also use at my jewelry events.

Today I recreated a Vintage Teacup Holder into a Earring Tree and with a few simple steps I'll show you how.

To make this project you'll need: a Sharpie marker, measuring tape, drill bit (made for metal not wood), safety glasses and a drill.

Start by placing reference dots with your Sharpie marker. Use your measuring tape to be sure you space the dots evenly.

Next put on your safety glasses and carefully drill each hole.

Last, add your jewelry and your Earring Tree is complete!

You can often find vintage teacup holders at most thrift stores, I found mine at a yard sale.

This weekend I spent a lot of time working on preparing for next weekends events which in case you didn't know are my Valentine's Day Jewelry Trunk Show and my 1st Bead & Bauble Trunk Show in Baltimore. I made some new one-of-a-kind peices like the ring above and wrote a two page to do list for the coming week so I can keep on top of it all.

Matt gave Marcus a hair cut and it turned out much better than taking him to a barber. We also ate homemade brownies and went out for pizza on Sunday! It was a relaxing mellow weekend which I needed and enjoyed.

Dottie Angel - An artist and author, I LOVE this quirky blog filled with vintage handmade creations and little snapshots of a unique home, studio and life. Her about page cracks me up.

Bubby & Bean - A design and style blog, I love the variety and beautiful graphics! Honestly I have not pinpointed what I love most about this blog yet, I just like looking at it and have been enjoying her recent guest posts while she was away in Mexico.

Dear Lizzy - A blog about the life and inspirations of a wife and mother of three in the scrap booking industry. This lady is funny and has the most adorable children!

The Dainty Squid - I just started reading this blog last week. The first day I saw it I read she was also watching United States Of Tara (I went through all three seasons in 1 1/2 weeks cause it was that good) and like me loves mushroom art and had cute photos of adorable pets. So I couldn't help but put this blog on my new favorites list!

Puppy Love & Pet Fostering

Recently adopted Lolly

Today Marcus and I went to visit my bf LeSales and got to meet her current foster pup, Lolly. Miss Lolly greeted us with wags, wiggles and she even rolled over on her back for belly rubs as soon as we walked in the door! Any nervous hesitations over worrying of Marcus around a unfamiliar dog immediately vanished. I was smitten and honestly after our visit feel a bit envious of the family who gets to call her their own this Monday. So meeting Lolly was kind of bittersweet because I wanted Lesales to keep her! But really I want her to keep every single rescue she's taken in because they’ve all been wonderful! I really respect LeSales and anyone who fosters animals, I imagine you can’t help but bond with each rescue and want to keep them all, however finding good homes and letting them go allows room to save another animal. Lolly is LeSales's 5th foster!

I wanted to write about today just in case anyone reading this post is thinking of getting a new pet I ask you to please consider adopting a rescue! There are so many wonderful animals of all breeds out there that desperately deserve a good home! Now I feel I should probably mention my beloved Tippy is not a rescue; a friend of mine gave her to me, although all the other animals in my life have been rescues and all my future animals will be too!

A Fun Day

My bf, Sunny and her kiddos came to visit yesterday. We took the kids to an open gym, jumped on huge trampolines and played in a foam cube pit. Then somehow still found time to poke around my studio for a bit.

I have to admit, it does make me a little nervous having three kids in my work space at one time, but I am happy to report they all did great.

Eden was very taken with my chain mail scraps, she made herself a lovely headdress meanwhile Dusk thought my metal file made an excellent imaginary sword.

Yesterday was fun day and I admit I had zero energy to work last night, so I called it quits and went to bed early. I hope to make up for it tonight.

Exploring The Studio With Marcus & Tippy

Recently I've been bringing Marcus into my studio. Now that he is 3 1/2 years old I'm trusting him more and more in my work space.

I don't actually work while he's in there, I have to keep a close eye, as he finds too much joy in pouring out little containers of beads, chain and jump rings. But its interesting for me to see what he is drawn to, naturally my main workbench is his biggest lure.

Basically, he's pretty thrilled to have a whole new part of the house to explore!

One day I'll set up a little art area just for him, and maybe a comfy chair too.

Although working from home has many challanges and disctractions, I wouldn't trade it for the world. I'm so happy that I can and at least the distractions are adorable ones!

New Moonflower! I just noticed the first few weeks of 2012 I have been drawn to creating in shades of blues for some reason. And let me also add I'm going to be adding more pearl cluster earrings to my shop, they are on of my most popular items and it's about time I offer them online.

New Flora! Perioidically I play around with making mushroom jewelry. It is always fun, wacky and most of the time one-of-a-kind.

In response to many requests I started making charms. These are the first two, more to come, little flowers and owls.

In this class students will learn classic wire wrapping techniques and design their own bracelet with fun charms! Demo includes wire wrapping used in beaded links and bead drops. The skills you learn in this class will allow you to make multiple one-of-a-kind pieces on your own. For the class, students will select their own kit from a variety of charm beads, gemstone, pearl, crystals and findings. Kit fees start at $22 and go up. Kits are purchased directly to the Instructor during the class. This class is open to students ages 15+.

Wednesday Night Craft Party Recap

Kyanite

When I first saw Kyanite I thought it was one of the most beautiful gemstones I’ve ever seen. I immediately wanted to design with it but missed the chance to purchase it.

This year I came across Kyanite again and designed a few pieces for my Etsy shop and The Muse.

I find myself completely enchanted by this gemstone more than ever. Then yesterday I received an email from one of my bf's Sunny (who makes wellness jewelry over at EdenatDusk.etsy.com) informing me that Kyanite is known for restoring balance and energy as well as creating calmness and tranquility in the wearer.

Guess what my New Years resolution is? To be more calm! How perfect that I have reconnected with this gem. I intend to make myself a Kyanite bracelet to help me reach my calmness goal.

Kyanite is mined in Brazil, I learned from Naomi that because of Brazil’s exchange rate increase, Kyanite may soon be not only hard to come by, but too expensive for me to design with. So I will enjoy it will I can! Also let me add, I will have some Kyanite with me for my first Beads and Baubles trunk show, if anyone is interested in designing with it also.

Sunday At The Bead Show

Last Sunday I got the opportunity to spend some time hanging out with Naomi at the Talisman booth during the Baltimore Bead Society Show.

I met so many nice customers and I was amazed by how many people I saw who were from Frederick. The experience really reconnected me with all the memories of working for Talisman and how much I enjoyed helping people shop for beads. I think I live vicariously through the customers as they buy. Seriously bead buying gives a good buzz. Maybe that sounds dorky, but I love beads!

Hanging out with Naomi and listening to her insider knowledge is so amazing. I actually tried to record her so I could remember all the neat stuff I was learning but she thought that was weird and wouldn’t let me, ha. Oh well! She’s in her 70’s and has devoted most of her life to the bead industry. Naomi’s been talking about retiring for like 10 years and even more so lately. She’s probably one of the hardest working people I’ve ever met. To be in your 70’s and still working so hard and so much is pretty amazing.

I hope to share some of what I learn from her on my blog in the future. If you have any questions for Naomi you’d like me to ask, just let me know!

The first week of the New Year temperatures started in the 20’s and by the end it actually reached 61! It was super bright out and we really enjoyed the sunshine.

But this past week seems like a blur to me, my sweet boy has unusual sleeping patterns and last week I got even less sleep than usual. As a result I decided to rearrange my studio schedule to accommodate when my brain functions the best. Mornings are now for bookkeeping, marketing and writing while he is at preschool till noon and then most evenings after he goes to bed are for design work, bench work and order filling. So far it has going great, I might even stick with this schedule when I am not sleep deprived because I just know that day will come, I’ve been waiting 3 years!

May 2012 bring everyone in my house consistent, decent sleep! Is 7 hours too much to ask? 8 or 9 would be great, but I don’t want to be to greedy, I can live with 7.

2011 Reflections & Blog Post Favorites

2011 has been filled with fun family weekends, great times with friends, I taught many jewelry classes and of course created countless new jewelry designs! But the biggest thing to happen in our lives was that we started off the year shortly after our son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We have spent this year learning to better understand how this affects Marcus and have learned a lot about Autism. We have led a very full schedule filled with early intervention programs and therapy for him while continuing try to maintain life as we’ve known it and keep up with it all. It’s been a little crazy at times. This year has changed me and my little family in so many ways, so many positive ways. We have the sweetest, most loving, happy little boy we could ever wish for and lucky for us he has all the support he needs to excel.

I continue to be incredibly grateful that people support what I do for a living which allows me to stay home with Marcus and be his biggest advocate.

It’s been quite a year and I’m very ready for a whole new one in just one day!

Our Christmas

This Christmas we traveled North to spend the holiday with Matt's side of the family in Rhode Island. We had a wonderful time and Matt's Mom, Debbie spoiled us with many gifts and lots of yummy meals. Marcus loved being at his Grandma-ma's house and was all smiles. The only glitches was me forgetting to put my winter coat in the car and let's just say Tippy was a little bit naughty at Debbie's house. But Matt's Mom came to the rescue, she loaned me a coat and she was very sweet about Tippy being bad!

Here are a few more photos of our roadtrip

There were beautiful skies and landscapes to gaze at along the way, we lucked out with good traveling weather. Marcus loves looking out the window, he was content to do so most of the trip.

I think Miss Tippy slept most of the drive, she hardly made a whimper the whole way.

We stopped at the Catoctin Mountain Orchard to get some Christmas goodies.

It was windy!

Christmas Eve was a bit chilly out but we still enjoyed some meandering around New Port and Wickford.

Christmas Day we had fun exchanging presents and relaxing around Debbie's house.

Tippy thought Marcus should stop playing with the ipad and pet her!

This is Matt's brother Ben, his girlfriend Melanie and their adorable kitty Sawyer. They made us a delicious brunch on Christmas morning.

Ben and Melanie live in an old cotton mill that has been converted into condos, their place is amazing!

It was a really nice trip and I hope we make it back to New England again in the Spring!

I love our tree.

Each decoration has special meaning. The vintage ornaments

are my favorite, they belonged to my Grandparents and all the rest were given to us by close friends or family members.

We put our Christmas Tree up the week after Thanksgiving and I'm hoping to keep it up till New Years weekend if it doesn't loose too many needles.

I think this year I need to start adding some handmade ornaments by Marcus.

I don't think any tree is complete until it has some handmade decorations! I know I made some pretty funny ones growing up!

This past Sunday my bf, LeSales hosted a jewelry party and fundraiser at her home in Baltimore.

We were thrilled so many of our friends were able to make it, with Christmas just one week away everyone's pretty busy and we weren't sure what to expect. It was fun and successful

and 20% of our sales will be donated to our furry friends at Barcs Animal Rescue where LeSales is a volunteer.

On Saturday I stopped by Margaret and Kevin Hluch’s annual holiday open house. I wanted to do a little Christmas shopping and check out their latest fiber art and ceramics.

The beautiful photographs are by their son, Matthew. It seems the whole family is talented!

The Hluch's guest artist was Susan Yin, a jewelry and special occasion accessories designer.

I was very taken with Susan’s hair ornaments and headpieces, especially the mustard yellow feather piece and her rhinestone jewelry is so, so pretty!

Free Craft Party Open House

The Muse is hosting their annual Free Craft Party and Fundraiser!

Wednesday, December 14, anytime between 7 and 9 pm

There will be several instructors, including myself, offering demos and free craft projects.

This year I am will be demonstrating how to make your own Holiday Ornament with letter stamps and a washer from the hardware store. Stamp an ornament to keep or give as a gift!

During our Open House we will be encouraging donations for this years charity, Lily’s Hope. Lily is 10 years old and has Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer.

Come help raise money for Lily, enjoy refreshments and learn a new craft!

The Open House is held at 113 West All Saints Street in downtown Frederick. There is a small parking lot located on the side of the building as well as street parking.

No need to register, just show up!

Tippy Tuesday

I tried so hard to get her to pose in front of our tree but she just kept spinning around, wondering what was on her head.

I'm thinking about getting her a dog bed for Christmas. I'm just not totally sure she'd use it though since she is such a lap dog.

Weekend Snapshots

On Saturday we went to Washington, DC to visit The Natural History Museum and the Botanical Garden’s Holiday Trains.

It was a beautiful day, sunny and warmer than typical December weather, perfect to meander around DC!

We were greeted by this giant elephant inside the entrance to the Natural History Museum.

The main reason we went to the museum was for the butterfly exhibit, which was amazing!

This next photo was taken in the Botanical Garden lobby. I'm not sure if you can tell but there were miniature botanical scenes inside these bulbs!

I thought nothing could top the Butterfly Exhibit but the fairy themed Garden Railway was nothing short of magical!

Every single detail in this Fairyland Dwelling exhibit was made of plants and other natural materials.

Almost every direction I looked had poinsettias, some in colors I never knew existed!

This crystal cave that was located inside a mountain we could walk through.

It was hard to photograph the trains as they zoomed by but I managed to capture this one.

Thomas The Train led the actual train set, which is Marcus’s favorite, we watch Thomas dvds daily. I thought it was great they bypassed using trains that would match the fairyland and instead used a set that children would relate too.

The permant exhibits were pretty impressive too!

This Christmas tree was amazing!

Marcus sure looks cute in his tiger hat! We had to carry him most of the day, which he loved, it was a lot of walking for a 3 year old.

That night when we got home Marcus ran right to his own Thomas train set and brought it to bed with him.

It was a good day.

Sunday I got focused and worked on orders till 1 am to make up for not working on Saturday, but it was worth it.

Our Weekend

Thanksgiving and the weekend were filled with lots of quality time with family. It ended up being in the 60's the past few days so we were able to enjoy being outside. It was nice to catch up with some of our extended family we don't get to see often, especially Marcus's cousins and second cousins!

Today I am dedicated to packing and shipping all the orders I managed to make over the weekend and keeping my fingers crossed the line at the post office isn't so bad!

New This Week

Hi there! Here are some the latest new pieces I've added to my shop.

I'm really enjoying getting back into beads and colors again. These pieces include green turquoise, citrine, carnelian and agate. This coming weekend I hope to add some kyonite necklaces too. Kyonite is the most beautiful shade of icy blue, it is really a unique and not too commonly used gemstone. I can't wait to share it with you.

Tonight I'm working to get my studio all tidied up so I can efficiently make and fill orders on Friday and Saturday. I'm very proud of myself for keeping things relatively neat this year. I think a lot of it has to do with having more visitors in my work space. So I've decided that is key, have people over regularly and there will be less chaos!

I'm really excited for Thanksgiving tomorrow. We will be spending it in Baltimore at my brother and sister in law's house. I have three adorable nieces that I can't wait to see! I also look forward to mashed potatoes and my Mom's pumpkin pie.

The Weekend

This is Marcus yesterday enjoying an Ice Cream Sunday at our favorite Frederick diner, The Mountain View. He started out using his spoon then decided he could consume it faster with his hands. I was really glad Matt was sitting next to him and not me, Marcus got covered in ice cream and was using Matt as a giant napkin. Ha ha ha!

I devoted just about the entire weekend to the jewelers bench, this was my last weekend having both Saturday and Sunday to work until January. I made and filled orders, designed a few new pieces and added them to my shop and made lots of to do lists for Thanksgiving week.

The holidays are officially here and I can't believe Thanksgiving is this Thursday! I'm not really sure how I will keep up with blogging over the next few weeks but I plan to!

I designed these pieces with holiday themed colors in mind. This season I find myself drawn to deep red garnet and charoite, which is a beautiful earthy, purple gemstone.
